BRAND NAMES: LIPITOR®
ACTIVE INGREDIENT: Atorvastatin calcium
DOSAGE FORMS: Tablets (oval); white (10mg, 20mg, and 40mg)
USE: Lipitor lowers high cholesterol levels; in people who have hypertension (high blood pressure ) and coronary heart disease; also used in people at risk of coronary heart disease. For example people who have diabetes, history of stoke or small vessel disease.
INDICATIONS: Hypercholesterolemia (primary; familial)
Prophylaxis treatment - Stoke history patients
- Coronary heart disease patients
DOSAGE: - Individualized dosing
- Usual dose is between 10-80mg
- Once daily dosing
- Maximum: 80mg/day

- Constipation - swelling of face/lips
- Diarrhea - unexpected muscle
- Trouble sleeping - muscle tenderness
- Weakness/tiredness - rash,itching
- Nausea, stomach pain
CONTRAINDICATIONS AND PRECAUTIONS
• Active hepatic disease; persistent raised LFT’s
• Pregnancy; lactation; women of child bearing potential
• Major surgery, trauma
• Elderly and children
• High alcohol intake
PATIENT COUNSELLING
• Lipitor should be taken only when prescribed and exactly as prescribed by the doctor.
• Lipitor can be taken with or without food.
• Swallow Lipitor with a glass of water or other fluid.
• Lipitor, when taken at the same time each day has the best effects.
• Always have your cholesterol levels checked when your doctor says.
• Contact your doctor if you experience unexplained muscle pain, tenderness or weakness especially when accompanied by fever and malaise.
• Always inform your doctor if taking any other medicines or remedies including over-the-counter (OTC) medicines as all this may be affected by Lipitor and may affect how it works.
• Avoid drinking large amount of alcohol and grapefruit and its juice when taking Lipitor as this can increase chances of liver problems and side effects.
• Lipitor should not be taken in pregnancy. Do not take Lipitor without first talking to your doctor if you are pregnant; intend to get pregnant or when you become pregnant while taking Lipitor.
• Should always tell your doctor if you have allergy to Atorvastatin; symptoms may include rash, itching swelling of face and lips. Also inform doctor about other medical conditions before taking Lipitor.
• Lipitor may cause mental alertness in some patients. Precautions should be taken while driving or operating machinery.
STORAGE
• Keep tablets in the blister packs until its time to be taken
• Keep in cool dry place ( below 25 degrees C)
• KEEP TABLETS OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN
